Health Informatics, Usability and HCI Internships

There are three 2012 summer internships available through the Biomedical Informatics Research Center and the Marshfield Clinic Research Foundation. These internships are open to graduate level and exceptional undergraduate level candidates who have significant interest in Health IT, Informatics, HCI and Usability Evaluation.

One opening is an HCI internship in general health IT within the Interactive Clinical Design Institute (ICDI) within the Marshfield Clinic Research Foundation.  The Interactive Clinical Design Institute (ICDI) is part of the Biomedical Informatics Research Center (BIRC) at the Marshfield Clinic Research Foundation.  The ICDI addresses the challenge of developing healthcare technology that is truly intuitive to use, minimizes medical errors and improves care.  The HCI summer internship is suitable for graduate and undergraduate students with background in the following areas: human computer interaction, computer science, health informatics, cognitive science, human factors, psychology, graphics design or industrial systems and engineering.

Areas of focus could include:

  • Analysis and predictive performance modeling of the electronic health record using a cognitive and behavioral analysis tool (e.g., CogTool).
  • Visualization and presentation of healthcare information that allows physicians to safely and accurately understand patient history, including explorations and prototyping of novel ways to represent patient information including, the medical condition and patient history. There is particular interest in using and exploring ecological interface design within these displays and testing/validating prototype designs.
  • Creation of UI prototypes specifically designed for presentation on highly mobile devices to aide in our understanding of what kinds of electronic health record information could be reasonably presented on iPADs or iPhones as compared to touch tablet PCs.
  • Usability testing, evaluation and baseline measures of the current electronic medical record and opportunities to conduct detailed analysis through field observations and/or usability lab studies with special emphasis and interest in eye-tracking analysis of an electronic health record and comparisons of redesigned records.

The other two internships are within our Dental Informatics Program – Dental informatics, a discipline concerned with the application of computer technology in dentistry, is a rapidly emerging field in which training opportunities are limited. Under the supervision and mentorship of Dr. Amit Acharya, the Biomedical Informatics Research Center is offering two dental informatics internship positions to provide opportunities for education and research in this discipline. Individuals who are engaged in the following areas are strongly encouraged to apply for this program: dentists, dental and pre-dental students, dental educators, dental hygienists, dental technicians, physicians, medical students, computer scientists, computer science undergraduate and graduate students, informaticians and informatics students. Successful applicants will be assigned a primary mentor and will work on one or more projects under the discipline.

Areas of focus could include:

  • Medical providers’ dental data needs.
  • Dental workflow analysis.
  • Dental information model and ontologies.
  • Integration of medical and dental electronic health records.
  • Clinical decision support systems in dentistry.
  • Visualization and presentation of dental information including novel ways to interact with 2D and 3D tooth charts.
  • Evaluation of and usability testing of new methods to interact with an electronic dental record including, use of eye tracking, brain signals (EEG) or other novel ways to allow hands free interaction with the dental record (e.g., gestures) in context of a dental examination.
  • Usability testing, evaluation and baseline measures of the current electronic dental record and opportunities to conduct detailed eye-tracking analysis.
