Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth, and Sports Day

Today, we celebrate the Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth, and Sports Day / Atatürk’ü Anma, Gençlik ve Spor Bayramı.

On this day in 1919, Mustafa Kemal Paşa, now known today as Atatürk, stepped ashore in Samsun to initiate the Turkish uprising against the Allied Forces following World War I. After landing in Samsun, he would start the Turkish National Movement, an act that would lead to the Turkish War of Independence and ultimately, the beginning of our great nation, the Republic of Turkey in 1923.

On May 19, 1936 Mustafa Kemal Atatürk reminisced with his friends in the Dolmabahçe Palace that he landed in Samsun 17 years ago. His friends did not remember, but Atatürk reminded them that it was the anniversary of our country being liberating. From then on, Atatürk declared that the Republic of Turkey celebrates the landing at Samsun each year. In 1938, the day was officially recognized as the “Festival of Youth and Sports.” This story can be found in Atatürk’s speech titled Nutuk. The festival later included a celebration of Atatürk because he considered May 19th to be his birthday.

As the Turkish GSA of the University at Buffalo, we proudly celebrate and remember the birth of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the beginning of the Turkish War of Independence, and all of the fallen soldiers who fought for our independence.

Turkish Republic Day 2017

October 29, 1923, a vote took place in the Grand National Assembly and Mustafa Kemal Atatürk was elected the first president of our nation by a unanimous vote. Since that day, our nation celebrates Republic Day on October 29th in honor of the birth of our Republic.

Today we celebrate an important milestone in our country’s history as we mark the 94th anniversary of the founding of our republic. The Turkish GSA of the University at Buffalo, proudly celebrates the founding of our Republic and commemorates the great leadership of Atatürk. We offer our warmest wishes to our Turkish GSA members and the millions of Turkish people that live around the world, as we celebrate the birth of the Republic of Turkey.

Cumhuriyet Bayramınız kutlu olsun!
