Our leader, the founder of the Turkish Republic, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, arrived in Samsun on May 19, 1919, to start the Turkish uprising against the invasion of the allied forces. Today, we accept the date of Ataturk’s arrival in Samsun as the starting date of our War of Independence. Following Ataturk’s wish, May 19 was declared to be Youth and Sports Day, and it was made an official holiday in 1938. The day received its present name, the “Commemoration of Ataturk, Youth and Sports Day”, in 1981, which became the 100th anniversary of Ataturk’s birth. As Turkish GSA of University at Buffalo, we are proudly celebrating this day and remembering Mustafa Kemal Ataturk and all the heroes of our Independence War with gratitude and respect.
On April 23, 1920, the foundations of the new, independent, secular, and modern Turkish republic were cemented with the founding of the Turkish Grand National Assembly during Turkish War of Independence. Grand National Assembly led by our leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk steered us through the war and defeated the Allied invasion forces on September 9, 1922, signed the Treaty of Lausanne on July 24, 1923, and officially founded the Republic of Turkey on October 29, 1923.
As Turkish students of University at Buffalo, we are proudly celebrating the 97th year of our Grand National Assembly, the unconditional representation of our sovereignty.
Our event will be held on 04/25/2016 in 5445 Transit Rd, Williamsville, NY 14221 at 6:00pm:
On October 29, 1923, the Republic of Turkey was officially founded by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk with a vote held in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. The declaration of the status of the nation as a republic has been celebrated every year on October 29 as the Republic Day.
As Turkish students of University at Buffalo, we are proudly celebrating the 93rd year of our nation. We offer our warmest wishes to the people of Turkey as we all celebrate the founding of the Republic of Turkey.
