GSA Policy Reminder

The GSA would like to remind club officers that personally profiting from holding office is a violation of SUNY policies. This includes, as an example, personally receiving cash or cash equivalent (e.g. gift cards) in exchange for using specific vendors for club events or for referring club members to businesses. All money coming from outside organizations or persons must go through the SBI Ticket Office or GSA co-sponsorship forms, and will be deposited in the club’s budget for the club’s use. Clubs found to be in violation will either have offending officers removed or be derecognized by the GSA, decided on a case-by-case basis. Thank you.

Call for Candidates ~ 2019-2020 GSA E-board

The GSA Senate passed the 2019 Election Code and Code of Conduct at the November 7th Senate meeting.  Please note that interested candidates for 2019-2020 GSA E-board positions will need to have attended at least two Senate meetings within the last twelve months prior to becoming a candidate.  That means that students interested in running who have not yet attended any Senate meetings will need to be present at the two remaining Senate meetings prior to the elections (February 6, 2019 and March 6, 2019).

Official petition packets will be available starting on January 28th in the GSA office at 310 Student Union.

UB Love Data Week

February 11-15, 2019, the UB Libraries will be celebrating Love Data Week (lovedataweek.org) – a global event raising awareness of critical issues related to data management, use, and preservation. We have three workshops on North Campus next week, all held in 310 Silverman Library:

  • Data Organization in Spreadsheets (Monday 2/11, 1-2pm)
    • Ever wondered if you’re formatting your spreadsheets efficiently? In this workshop we share some best practices for organizing spreadsheet data!
  • Play with Data (& Play-doh™)! (Wednesday 2/13, 1-2pm)
    • If you’re curious about n-grams, corpus analysis, or social network analysis – or what those terms even mean! – we cover the very basics of playing with different types of textual data in this hands-on introductory workshop.
  • Wikidata Workshop and Edit-a-thon (Friday 2/15, 12-1pm workshop & 1-4pm edit-a-thon)
    • Join us to learn about how the open database that powers Wikipedia is structured, and help improve its accuracy by playing games! (The Distributed Game is an interactive way to update and correct Wikidata entries – no prior experience needed.)

In addition, a workshop is being offered on South Campus on Research Data Management Essentials (Thursday 2/14, 10:30am-12pm, 130 Abbott Hall), which covers some best practices for creating, sharing, and preserving research data in the health sciences and sciences.
