Mini-symposium on “Computational Science: An Industrial Perspective”

May 4, 2015 @ 9:45 am - 3:00 pm

Free

GSA and the Hachmann Research Group are organizing a one-day mini-symposium titled ‘Computational Science: An Industrial Perspective’ on May, 4th 2015.

This symposium is aimed at providing our graduate students with first-hand insights into research outside of academia. For this, we are inviting three external and two local speakers who performed computational work during graduate school to talk about their experience of finding jobs in the industry, their transition from university to the real world, and their insights into the computational R&D landscape.

The speakers are Dr. Roel Sánchez-Carrera (BASF, formerly Bosch), Dr. Roberto Olivares-Amaya (BigDataBio), Dr. Matteo Cavalleri (Wiley/IJQC), Prof. Edward Furlani (UB, formerly Eastman Kodak), and Prof. Michel Dupuis (UB, formerly IBM, PNNL). Please find the details in the event poster.

The speakers have about 30 minutes each to give a talk/presentation explaining their transition from academia to industry, sharing their experience with the job market and their profession, giving insights into the nature of their work (in general terms), and – if desired – pitching their employer. Each presentation will be followed by a 10 minute Q&A and there will be a joint panel discussion with all speakers in the end.
