My dissertation is a study of deinstitutionalization in New York State in the second half of the twentieth century. Using case studies of the West Seneca Developmental Center and Willowbrook State School, two residential institutions for people with developmental disabilities, my project explores the process of deinstitutionalization within the larger context of social welfare policy and the Disability Rights Movement.
