Dr. Guingona successfully defended his dissertation, “The Sino-Philippine Link: A History of Early Twentieth Century Asian Interaction,” which explores the vibrant, but under-examined, avenues of exchange that linked China and the Philippines in the first half of the twentieth century, and the flows of people, commodities, and discourses that encompassed those connections. A transnational project that incorporates published and archival documents collected in the United States, China, and the Philippines, “The Sino-Philippine Link” contains cases on student exchanges, athletic competitions, media representations, political entanglements, intermarriages, and general migrations. Challenging nation-centered proclivity and agendas of erasure that have seen the rich history of Sino-Philippine interaction pushed to the wayside, this project seeks to bring this inter-Asian relationship to the forefront.
