My dissertation, “A Physical Wreck of His Former Self:’ Gender and Disability in the Post Civil War North,” examines the lives of disabled and troubled Union soldiers and veterans. My work focuses on the veterans who failed to fit into the heroic image the Northern public held of military men: the mentally ill, the emasculated, the financial failures, the bitter and the suffering.
